Last Lecture

I was in the US recently and there was a lot of media coverage of a book called the "Last Lecture" published by a 47 year professor , Randy Pausch who is dying of pancreatic cancer. Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University gave a lecture in September 2007 which is the basis of his new book. The "last lecture" is an academic tradition where a professor is invited to speak as if it's the last lecture he will ever give. However, in Pausch's case, it was. Last week Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero named his country's first majority female cabinet, with nine of seventeen ministries headed by women. This includes a seven months pregnant Defence Minister, 37 year old Carme Chacon. She was the government's former minister for housing and is a constitutional law professor who studied in Montreal and Toronto and is expecting her first child. Mr. Zapatero has proudly referred to himself as a feminist which accounts for my subject heading "In Good Company" because I proudly declared the same in a prior post.

I am a feminist!! There I said it!! Let's face it, for many, it's the real "f" word!! For me, declaring myself to be a feminist simply means I believe in equal rights and opportunities for all, regardless of sex, race, politics etc. What makes this belief so scary or offensive or so hard to acknowledge!!

Gloria Steinem: An Inspiration

When asked the question "Who would you like to have dinner with, if you could invite anyone to join you?" I said I would love to have dinner with Gloria Steinem. I find her profoundly inspirational!!! I have seen her speak on several occasions and each time she has walked on stage, the largely female adudience has risen to their feet in a spontaneous and prolonged standing ovation. I believe they are applauding her courage and determination, her willingness to fight for the rights of all women! On each occasion, she has encourgaged the women in the audience to perform an outrageous act, every day!! And I must say, this idea has always appealed to me!!
