Vimy Ridge and the Vimy Memorial

Today is the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, "the triumphant First World War battle in which Canada suffered 10,600 casualties, nearly 3,600 of them fatal."  In an article in today's Globe Jane Urquhart, author of The Stone Carvers, "recalls the neglect -- historic and physical -- that Vimy and its spectacular monument once endured, and applauds its renaissance as part of our national narrative."   Ms Urquhart tells us her own education (like mine) gave the Battle of Vimy Ridge short shrift and it was not until she visited the site with her future husband  and was profoundly moved by a tour of the site and in her case so inspired by it that years later she wrote The ...

Sheryl Sandberg – Three Takes

Sheryl Sandberg is getting a fair amount of press these days given Facebook's filing last week to go public and her co-chairing the World Economic Forum in Davos this year.   As a result, I have been able to listen to her speak very eloquently at Davos and read about her in both the Globe (Reprint of  a Bloomberg article) and the New York Times.  Every time I see her from a different perspective, however, I am always hugely impressed by her.  I find it somewhat distressing to see how the media endeavours to interpret her intentions, her actions, and her success, subtly questioning her motivations and her commitment!   I have attached the links, so you can see these recent takes on her ...
