What would I do if I weren’t afraid?

By - Last updated: Thursday, January 9, 2014

I stole the above question from Sheryl Sandberg's 2011 commencement address to the graduating class of Barnard College which she talks about in the first chapter of her fabulous book "Lean In."   Sandberg ended her address to the class with the following:   "So please ask yourself: What would I do if I weren't afraid? And then go do it."   Sandberg ends the first chapter of her book with the following words:   "Writing this book is not just me encouraging others to lean in. This is me leaning in. Writing this book is what I would do if I weren't afraid."   Bravo Sheryl!!   So please ask yourself as we being the new year: "What would I do if I weren't afraid? And then go do it."   I dare ...

Taking YES for an answer

An article in the December issue of CAmagazine by Mary Teresa Bitti reminded me of the importance of being a skilled negotiator in both the workplace and life, in general. In brief, it offers a few key dos and don'ts   1. Do broaden your view of negotiating and what it can do for your career   2. Don't view neogtiating as a win/lose situation   3. Do find a sponsor, someone in a senior position who will advocate for you   4. Don't assume if you work hard and do a good job your effort will be rewarded   5. Do get comfortable asking for what you want   6. Don't take the first offer and don't accept the first No   7. Do take some risk   8. Don't overnegotiate   9. Do be clear on ...

Summer Reading Suggestions

I belong to the best book club in the world (in my very humble opinion)!! Three things make it great.   1. Our club is hosted by the same wonderful woman each time we meet and she makes us a fabulous dinner every time we get together;   2. One of our club members owns Churchill's Fine Gourmet Gifts and each time we meet she brings incredibly decadent sweet treats; and   3. Our meetings are "facilitated" by the fabulous Nina McCreath one of the former proprietors of The Flying Dragon book store (where we previously had the privilege of meeting). It is Nina who really takes our club over the top!! She loves books and reading and shares her insights about the book we are ...

Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

I read Sheryl Sandberg's new book Lean In yesterday!!   And I loved it!! Every single word of it!!   I believe writing this book and sharing these stories and her thoughts on "Women, Work and the Will to Lead" was a generous and courageous act of leadership on her part!! She definitely had more to lose than gain by doing so and she knew it and wrote the book anyways!!   Congratulations, Sheryl!!   I encourage you to read it and I would love to hear what you think of it!!
