We received an email from Valerie Pringle this week and she has agreed I can share it with you.

Subject: Ryerson Lifeline Syria Update

Happy New Year indeed!

I wanted to give you the good news that the money you donated to our fund at Ryerson Lifeline Syria has been put to good use.

The Al Hasan family arrived this weekend in Toronto.  They have moved into a 3-bedroom apartment at Hurontario and Burnamthorpe where there is a Syrian community.  They can walk to Square One, schools and the ESL centre.

The Al Hasans ( Batal, Turkie and their four children; 20 year old Fusie, 17 year old Ali, 14 year old Rainia and 9 year old Nasimi) are from Aleppo but had to leave there and have been living in Jordan for the past 3 years.

The staff at Ryerson have been amazing.  I have a very strong core team of volunteers working with me who are making this all possible.  Most of them are also donors who asked to get involved further.  The team is: Alison Smith, Ghassan Barazi, Eva Czigler, Tina Srebotnjak, Michael Harris, Lorna Lang, Jan Sutin, Martha Peterson, Sally Armstrong, Cate Hyde, Kate Black, Layla Barazi, Penny Bell, Jennifer Bell, Elizabeth Renzetti, Karen Pinker, Wendy Southall and Lubna Kapadia, who is a student at Ryerson.  People are taking responsibility for finances, education, social services, job hunting and all the ways we can help our family succeed in Canada.  We are responsible for them for 12 months and will work hard to make sure they have every opportunity here.

You have made that possible.

In fact, our fundraising was so successful that we think that we can sponsor 2 more families.  John Tory and his family raised $30,000 and put it in this fund.  We will look to have them take the lead on bringing another family to Toronto in the next few months and our team will support them.  We will have learned a great deal from the Al Hasans.  We will look to bring a third family to Canada in the Spring.  This is all thanks to your generosity.  Please let me know if you need any more information.

Also let me know if you have not yet received a tax receipt from Ryerson for your donation.

The Al Hasans say thank you and so do I.  We welcome them to Canada.
