Taking Chances!!

Bev Morris is the proprietor of Churchill’s Fine Gourmet Gifts and so much more!!

I am a member of her book club and so received the note she sent out to her BBC (best book club) friends. I asked for her permission to share it with you and she agreed.

“Happy New Year to my BBC (best book club) friends!

Really looking forward to spring and book discussions. I just turned 65 (yay! senior’s discount) and have been reflecting a lot on the last 10 years. I’m sending my thoughts on “taking chances” in the attachment. I have been profoundly surprised at myself. I wish you, all the best, in taking chances whatever they may be.”

I have admired Bev Morris and her courageous transition for years from afar. And I have thought about telling her story on my blog, so others could be inspired by her journey but didn’t get to it!!

I wanted to tell her story because she was a role model in terms of answering the question: “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” before the question had been posed.  Bev refers to it as “taking chances” and tells us  how she did just that in the attachment to the note she sent to her (BBC) friends. I was thrilled when she agreed to share it with you!!  I found her words moving and inspirational.

“This was the 10th Christmas for Churchill’s Fine Gourmet Gifts. It has been a long, hard and interesting journey. I didn’t know I had so much to learn. When people ask me would you do it again, I say “hell no!” That’s because if I’d known how hard it would be, how long it would take, how much there was to learn I would not have believed I could. Not knowing was a blessing, not taking a chance would have been worse than not succeeding. Most of my choices have led to success but some have been hard learned lessons. So the real answer is that I’m glad I did it but thankful for my ignorance at the start.

This is how it happened.

It started on a dock in Muskoka with the kind of things you say when you‘re sipping wine and talking big!

“You work too hard” she says

“I know but I can’t seem to catch up” I say

“You could sell cookies” she says

“I love baking and my friends are always wanting to give them as gifts” I say

“You should start a business” she says

“Hmm, a gift business with boxes of cookies!” I say “But I’d need to sell my house and move to Toronto”

“Okay – no problem” she says

Year after year after year…..

Until a chance drive by on a street I had never travelled. A sign on a lawn “Apt for Rent.” Thirty minutes later I was signing a lease for an apartment with no plan. I believe it was more than a chance meeting. I believe it was my sign – to go forward, to live without regret. The words on that sign were as plain as day

For Rent

Take this chance now

This is the time

So nine years after we officially opened in April 2005, we’re still standing. It was never meant to be so long. I thought I would be retiring as many of my nursing friends have done. The lazy days of a simpler life still seem quite far away. We have had a journey though!”

Thank you, Bev!!

I have tasted Churchill’s cookies thanks to a generous gift giver- cookies were divine, simply, divine ! A great, great story ! You are very brave, Bev. I applaud your success and understand at a very personal level why it is really good not to know how hard your dream will be.
Best, Nancy
