QIs it possible to use the network I have built with company support in a classy and ethical way to source new job opportunities?

I think the simple answer to this question is NO – there is no classy or ethical way to seek out new job opportunities when you are attending an event on behalf of and paid for by your company. Now, let’s be real – if you impress someone at one of these events, they may contact you to discreetly determine your interest in alternate employment. There are lots of examples of the latter. One colleague of mine was a last minute fill-in for an executive that could not attend and make a speech at an industry conference. He did such a great job, a week or so later, he received a call from an American competitor of our company that had heard him speak and ended up taking the new job. The competitor did not approach him at the conference about the job but rather just to congratulate him on his speech. Now, that was classy.
