Making Connections: How to Build and Manage Relationships

I had the distinct pleasure of speaking to a group of young women at a lunch sponsored by Women in Capital Markets yesterday. The subject was Making Connections: How to Build and Manage Relationships.  In preparation for the occasion, I reviewed the Babes stories I have told here and came up with a list of Basic Principles  in connection with this subject which I elaborated on during the luncheon. My ten Basic Principles were:

Basic Principles

  1. Be authentic.
  2. Establish a network of support.
  3. Ensure the relationships in your personal lives are “in order”.
  4. Develop your relationships with woman.
  5. Find a mentor and a role model.
  6. Don’t burn any  bridges…no matter what.
  7. Support those you can, in particular, support other women whenever you can.
  8. Don’t look for a leadership position; be a leader.
  9. Market yourself to a broad audience.
  10. Ask for what you want

I assured the audience most people would be flattered to be approached by a young person asking for advice and assistance and would respond in a very positive way!!  And I shared my philosophy about leadership which is that we choose whether to be leaders or not in our lives which means we can choose the impact we want to have in our world and on the people in it. And I encouraged them to be supportive of other women which in my experience is not something we are particularly or consistently good at.

It was an absolute and utter pleasure for me to be invited to share my stories, my thoughts and my perspectives with this group of wonderful young women!! I am grateful!!

Have a wonderful day!!
