What I Learned On My Summer Vacation. Part 4

posted July 28th, 2011 by Janet Graham - One Comment

This summer I am spending almost two full months at our cottage in Muskoka and for most of the month of July it has been my beloved and I on our own. This is a first for me and for us. I thought I would post weekly about what I am learning from this new adventure. This is my fourth post.

  1. I finally booked our airfare for a trip to Italy and was able to use points and fly business class!! Although, we will have to wait until June 2012 to go, I am thrilled nonetheless!!
  2. I ordered tickets to attend TIFF for the first time ever!! TIFF has made ordering tickets easier for neophytes like me and I am really excited to be part of it. I have always relied on friends to take pity on me and include me in their plans; this year I took responsibility for myself and I am really looking forward to it!!
  3. I took a Restorative Yoga class last week, another first for me. The old me would not have been able to sit still through this class, the new me absolutely loved it!!
  4. I broke down and booked a mani/pedi in Muskoka… another first for me. Gardening decimated my nails, so it was an emergency session before my  appearance in public (as a spectator not a performer) at the Elvis Festival in Collingwood this weekend. (See # 6 below.)
  5. I created/restored another garden. What a tremendous feeling of satisfaction!! I walk by it and smile to myself.
  6. I attended the Elvis Festival in Collingwood with my beloved and two dear friends… this was another first for all of us and I am fairly certain it will be the last! Enough said! And it was the first time I have been away from the cottage  overnight since I arrived at the beginning of July.
  7. We have begun to watch Six Feet Under, a series we have owned for some time and had not watched until now. We are not certain we will make it to the end of the series; it is so different from West Wing and others we have enjoyed, however, we are giving it a chance!!
  8. I finished only one book this week, One Day which will be made into a movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Ferris. I will be interested to see the movie and how it adapts the contents of the book.
  9. We had dinner and spent the night with some friends at their cottage (and went out for a wonderful breakfast together in the morning)!! This was the second night we spent away from our cottage in July… twice in one week!! It was wonderful to spend time and get caught up with our friends!!
  10. This is the first week I have not played golf since I arrived at the cottage. I certainly hope my game has not suffered!!  Obviously, my very active social life impacted the time I had to garden and read and play golf this week. I expect this will change over the next few weeks because I have few plans to leave the premises for any extended period of time. Regardless, I am beginning to dread the end of this fabulous sojourn… September seems soooooo close and I can feel the time ticking away!! This will be a real test in terms of staying present!!

I hope you are enjoying your summer too!! I would love to hear all about it in the Comments section below!!

In reference to point # 6 above. It appears next year’s journey to the Elvis festival will be a boy’s road trip.
