What I Learned On My Summer Vacation. Part 2

This summer I am spending almost two full months at our cottage in Muskoka and for most of the month of July it will be my beloved and I on our own. This is a first for me and for us. I thought I would post weekly about what I am learning from this new adventure. This is my second post.

  1. The delight my beloved dog Oakley gets from swimming. He could spend the entire day in the water. He is training us to take him swimming by picking up a tennis ball in his mouth and staring deeply at us and if we don’t get the message he slips down to the lake and waits for us to miss him. He has trained us to look for him in “his office” at the side of our dock where he waits patiently for us to throw the ball for him. In the time it takes us to realize he is missing, he might actually swim a few laps out to our floating raft and back on his own. He has inspired me to do more of what I love each day because I can see the joy doing exactly that brings him.
  2. I love music; it brings me great joy!! And I realized I don’t listen to it very often. This week I tried to listen more. In fact, my beloved created a Motown playlist for me and I played it a lot, even when I was gardening. It was a sweet pleasure and so easy to indulge!
  3. I love to dance; it brings me great joy!! And I realized I don’t dance as often as I would like; I tell myself I don’t get very many opportunities. This week I tried to dance a little every day!! It brings me such joy and it’s just plain fun!!
  4. We have been watching the first season of The Good Wife, an episode or two almost every evening since we arrived at the cottage. And this week we finished it. What a fabulous series!! The three main female characters are wonderful!!
  5. I had 5 yards of mulch delivered this week… what was I thinking?!?!? And I rejuvenated a garden… what an awesome feeling!!
  6. I have been baking cookies. Thank heavens, I am not eating them all!!
  7. My golf game continues to frustrate me and I refuse to give up. Our grand dog Ben wouldn’t give up!! (See #10 last week.). This article by Larry David written for The New Yorker pretty much sums up my feelings about the game. http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2011/07/04/110704sh_shouts_david
  8. I read two fabulous books this week by Ian Hamilton, The Water Rat of Wanchai and The Disciple of Las Vegas.¬† I read the first one from cover to cover in a day; I couldn’t put it down. The second one took a couple of days but I stayed up late into the second night to finish it. What a treat!!
  9. I find my emotions are closer to the surface here without the distractions of my busy city life. I feel things more and I am learning to simply experience feelings of loneliness and sadness and grief ¬†without wondering what is causing them or endeavouring to distract myself… I am simply “being” in all my glory!!
  10. I discovered Sir Ken Robinson. He gave a very famous TED talk in 2006. You can find it here http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html I watched another talk he gave focused on his book The Element on passion and talent and finding your “element”. You can watch it here. http://educatingaccountants.ca/tedtalks/2011/06/18/ken-robinson-on-passion-and-finding-your-element/ He is a very charming speaker and very wise; I loved both of these talks!

I hope you enjoy this post and that wherever you are and whatever you are doing you are enjoying your summer!! I would love to hear from you in the Comments section below.
