Twitter…Start Making Sense!!

posted September 25th, 2009 by Janet Graham - One Comment

My blog posts are linked to twitter and you can follow me on twitter @babesonbayst. I encourage you to check twitter out, so you have at least a minimal understanding of it and how it works. In its most basic form, it’s a very simple application. In the meantime, I will share with you my personal observations about twitter.

  1. My tweets to date have simply announced my blog posts. I cannot bring myself to tweet about the minutiae of my personal (or professional) life. Who would find this stuff interesting and do I want them “following” me. And I cannot imagine celebrity minutiae holding my attention for any length of time.  What motivates a celebrity to post? Simple self promotion? This makes no sense to me.
  2. To increase the number of people who follow me, I am encouraged to follow others.  In fact, I am encouraged to follow people for no other reason than so they will follow me and I can increase the number of people following me.  In my simple logic, I am to follow a bunch of people, I don’t know or care about, so a bunch of people who don’t know or care about me will follow me. This makes no sense to me.
  3. Karl Lagerfeld is on twitter. He has 112,000+ followers and he follows no one. This makes complete sense to me.
  4. I follow a 29 year old named Justin who tweets about the stuff his 73 year old father says. You can find him at shitmydadsays on twitter.  He follows one person and has 383,500+ followers. This makes a lot of sense to me. I think he is hysterical!!
  5. You can search twitter in terms of a specific topic eg Toronto film festival. My daughter taught me this one and it makes sense to me. It is like google “on the ground”.
  6. You can follow trending topics on twitter. This caused me to see Inglourious Basterds which was a horrible creation by Quentin Tarantino.  From this I have concluded, it might not make sense for me to consider the trending topics on twitter when selecting ways and means of entertaining or amusing myself.
  7. Many people tweet to promote themselves, their business, their blogs etc. In my opinion, relentless self promotion does not serve any one well.  If twitter serves this purpose only, it doesn’t make sense to me. Does it serve another purpose?
  8. I plan to keep tweeting hoping to see some value in it or to learn something from it or to have a little fun with it or that it will begin to make sense to me!! And I will keep you “posted” in terms of what I might discover on this journey in the future.
  9. In the meantime, you can follow me @babesonbayst.
  10. Enjoy!!!

This is very funny. I don’t get twitter either. Will definitely not see Inglorious Basterds! Thanks.
